Speech-Language Pathology


What do we do?

Speech-Language Pathologists help children and adults that are having difficulty communicating grow to be the best communicator he/she can possibly be. Speech-Language Pathologists also teach families strategies that encourage communication, dependent on the nature of the difficulty. We also can help with feeding and swallowing related challenges. We can help with all age groups who may have:

  • Speech Sound Delays and Disorders - including articulation, phonology and motor speech disorders
  • Language Delays and Disorders - difficulty understanding and using verbal or non-verbal language
  • Voice
  • Fluency - stuttering
  • Cognitive-communicative Disorders - including social communication skills, reasoning and problem solving
  • Pre-literacy and Literacy Skills
  • Autism
  • Syndromes
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Medical Diagnoses that are associated with communication challenges
  • Feeding concerns

Assessment

Initial Consultation Your first 30 minutes of consultation is provided free of charge. This consultation allows us to meet one another and discuss your concerns, decide what services will look like, and decide whether our services are right for you. Consultation can be done on the phone or in person, at your home or at the office. Informal Assessment Informal assessment of communication skills is provided during the initial assessment session. It is also ongoing and will continue throughout treatment, as needed, in order to measure progress, adapt activities and adjust what skills are targeted. Formal Assessment A formal assessment may be required to determine the nature of the communication impairments and the best ways to treat them. Formal assessment results in information that is compared to children of the same age. This is typically completed in one visit or it may require a few sessions to complete. A report will be written, if requested. Treatment We provide treatment that is specific to the client and families' needs. Dependent on the needs determined by the informal or formal assessment, treatment may occur in a clinic, home or school based on our discussion. How often and how long sessions vary dependent on the needs. Treatment can range from sessions two times per week to once a month dependent on the nature of the concern and the families' preferences.
